The YA-YA Network Internship program is designed to train youth organizers that will learn and master the skills needed to engage in campaign work, base building and become core organizers capable of building long term power in their communities. The first part of our internship is only 6 weeks long and where youth organizers learn the basics and are introduced to the community organizing in NYC. Those who successfully complete the 6 week basic training part are eligible to apply for part 2 of our 12 week internship, which allows youth organizing to practice their skills and receive intensive training and support in their leadership development.
After completing the 12 week internship, youth organizers are invited to stay on board and support new youth leaders in our summer Institute. Interns receive a small stipend for the completion of the 6 week basic training, and a competitive stipend for the rest of Spring and Summer.
We are looking for youth that are:
Passionate about social justice, committed to fighting for Human Rights and safe and inclusive spaces for all
Critical thinker about issues like poverty, equity and oppression
Demonstrates interest in learning more about the different issues of race, gender and sex, immigration, class, etc.
Committed to learning new things and sharing their experiences with others.
Self-motivated, Resilient, demonstrates ability to overcome obstacles
Able to work both independently and as part of a group and meet deadlines
Available 3 days a week after school, and during the Summer (if selected for Part 2 & 3 of internship)
Some experience in youth organizing, activism or leadership is recommended
The YA-YA Network is a safe space for all and highly encourage People of Color and those that identify as LGBTQ to apply
Part 1: The Basics (January 30- March 9, 2017 including extended hours during mid-winter break Feb 20-24) This session will cover orientation, community building, intro to anti-oppression, School to Prison Pipeline, Prison Industrial Complex, basic facilitation skills, event planning, outreach, base building, etc. As a final project, with staff support, interns will organize an event to put all their skills into practice. This training internship pays $300.
Part 2: Dig Deeper (March 14 – June 1, 2017) This internship pays $2,000 Interns will then be eligible to apply to continue their work in either:
Popular Education: Advanced training in facilitation and workshop development. Interns will be responsible for facilitating workshops at YA-YA and out at other organizations to spread awareness and build the knowledge and skills of other youth who want to make change.
Base building: Event planning, networking, outreach in-person, by phone, using social media, flyer development, using artivism, recruitment for YA-YA’s Summer Institute etc. Interns will be responsible for bringing youth together to build collective power.
Part 3: Summer Institute (June 26-August 24, 2017) This internship pays $2,000 Interns will use the skills they have developed to take leadership during our Summer Institute, which introduces new youth to activism and organizing and prepares them to take action.
To receive the full stipend interns will be expected to complete specific projects during each session.
